Artistic Vision
Regina Folk Festival Inc. presents music year round in Regina through its year round concert series and its annual festival. RFF Inc. has been presenting high quality independent music to Saskatchewan audiences for over 40 years. Historically independent or “folk” music was ‘the people’s music’ and artists performing in the “folk” genre tended to be linked to grassroots community movements that struggled against the imposition of a status quo by the mainstream community. This is still true for the folk music that is being presented by RFF Inc. today. The Artistic vision of RFF Inc. is that “folk” music must continue to expand and evolve over the years rather than simply being a repetition of music from many years ago. Under the mission of RFF Inc. and the artistic vision of the Artistic Director, RFF Inc. is beginning to dispel the stereotypes held by the general public as to what folk music really is. The vision of RFF Inc. is not clouded by market trends, or money, or the music industry but is rather based on values that run deeper and that draw us together as human beings, no matter how very different we at first seem to be.
The main focus of RFF Inc. is music that falls a little outside the lines; music that challenges audiences to go beyond the repetition of the pop world and inside of themselves as part of a deeper artistic experience. RFF Inc. strives to present a diverse array of music geared to audiences who increasingly seek meaning and substance that mainstream commercial music lacks. One of the goals of the festival and concert series is to inspire in its audience members, through high quality and varied music, dance and visual art, a sense of the value of personal expression and individual voice to the development of healthy communities. The evolution of the independent music scene in Regina has seen the term folk used to describe the people (the folk) involved in the process of celebrating culture, diversity and the power of creative expression rather than to describe a specific style of music.
While there is much debate in the traditional folk music community as to the place of world (multicultural) music on folk stages it is the strong belief of the Regina Folk Festival that the inclusion of music from many cultures transforms the experience of a folk festival and concert series into a world of sharing and respect that leads to increased cultural sharing and understanding.
RFF Inc. has, through its consistent delivery of quality musical entertainment, grown into a professional volunteer-run organization recognized for its contribution to local arts and culture. As a thirty something year old organization, RFF Inc. is one of Canada’s most established music organizations and is proud to present Western Canada’s longest running music festival.
