DJ Arianna Giroux

Ariana Giroux (she/they) is a disabled queer and trans DJ and Electronica producer and performer based in Treaty 4 Territory. With a passion for making circuits go bleep bloop and groovy house vibes to relax and dance to, she comes equipped with too many vibes to count.

From House, Techno, Electro Swing, and Lofi to live improvised techno performances using samplers and grooveboxes, they aim to create memories and groovy basslines.

DJ Dyke Boyfriend

DJ Dyke Boyfriend is the deejay project of Treaty 4/Regina-based multimedia and performance artist Jaye Kovach. She came to deejaying through making mixes for their many crushes and now he’s here at RFF to tell you how she really feels.

JayWood

Canadian songwriter and producer, Jeremy Haywood-Smith was born and raised in the Canadian prairies, spending most of his life in the city of Winnipeg. Since 2015 JayWood has captured the young writer’s journey of self discovery and heartache through unique songwriting and an ever-evolving sound. Haywood-Smith taught himself how to write and record during the primitive days of the project but has developed through challenging himself to never fear change. Haywood-Smith's soulful voice and dynamic production style shines through his 2021 release, Some Days—a polished reworking of his 2015 EP of the same name. Despite the culturally homogenous nature of his hometown, Haywood-Smith takes inspiration from a wide range of Black performers and artists working in all genres and eras. Visionary artists like Kendrick Lamar inspired Haywood-Smith's approach to storytelling and world-building while constructing this album. I love Kendrick's ability to pull from life experiences growing up and conveying a message that's greater than himself.” says Haywood-Smith This album felt like I was making something that I would want my younger self to hear.” Slingshot is Haywood-Smith's most conceptually layered and sonically varied release to date. His sophistication as a recording artist is evident in a record that could seamlessly serve as the soundtrack to a legendary house party or a bike ride alone in the woods.

Partner

Partner is funny, but not a joke. Gay, but not for each other.

Lucy and Josée formed Partner in the spring of 2014. They were looking to experiment with genre, discuss being gay, and share some jokes and ideas. Their objective has remained the same over the past seven years, although in that time their sound has shifted considerably. Their drummer Simone TB first appeared on their 2017 album “In Search of Lost Time” and has been with the band full time since 2018.

People of the Sun

People of the Sun is a SK-based collective built around of a diverse group of creators. Designed to bring forth a smooth blend of golden era hip hop and R&B. Their sound is effortlessly cool; tight harmonies, hard-hitting rhymes, and infectious hooks. With a message of unity and diversity woven into their “live-of the-floor” process, People of the Sun is a band that is meant to be seen live.

The Steves

The Steves are a rock band from Regina, SK. They sound like you’re playing your favourite power-pop LP at the wrong speed and take cues from Jay Reatard and The Modern Lovers.

Since 2015 they’ve toured across Canada and have put out a handful of singles and two EPs, 2015’s No Solos and 2017’s Weak Man. Their third EP, To the Band, was recorded and mixed in various Regina character homes by drummer Paula Bogdan between 2019 and 2022 and was mastered by Juno-nominated producer/engineer Orion Paradis at SoulSound Studio.

To the Band is their longest release to date (16 minutes) and focuses on much of the quintessence of living in Canada’s largest small town—waiting in line at the overhyped ice cream shop (to prove a point), being snubbed by a friend (of a friend of a friend who only met you once), and having your friends move away to the big city (Saskatoon). The EP’s preceding singles, “Texas” as well as the title-track, “To the Band,” will be available on streaming services March 1, and the full EP will be released March 23 on Grind Central Records.
